Romans 1

1Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God— 2the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures 3regarding his Son, who as to his human nature was a descendant of David, 4and who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord. 5Through him and for his name's sake, we received grace and apostleship to call people from among all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith. 6And you also are among those who are called to belong to Jesus Christ.

7To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints:
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

Paul's Longing to Visit Rome
8First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being reported all over the world. 9God, whom I serve with my whole heart in preaching the gospel of his Son, is my witness how constantly I remember you 10in my prayers at all times; and I pray that now at last by God's will the way may be opened for me to come to you.

11I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong— 12that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other's faith. 13I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that I planned many times to come to you (but have been prevented from doing so until now) in order that I might have a harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles.

14I am obligated both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish. 15That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you who are at Rome.

16I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. 17For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith."

God's Wrath Against Mankind
18The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

21For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.

24Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

26Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.

28Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. 29They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

Hello Free Agents! I hope that you'll visit this blog frequently and read our reflections upon the passage and that you will also post your own comments and insights of the chapter.

So we'll start at the beginning of Romans..

Paul, the author of this book, begins by addressing those in Rome that he is wants to be there with them and preach the gospel to them. A key point in this longing is that he points out that he wants to encourage and be encouraged by each other's faith. I think this is very essential in a community.. to be able to encourage each other to press on, be strong, and truly delight in God's faithfulness so that we in turn may be faithful to our great God. What are some ways that we, as a family group, can encourage each other? Also, Paul's eagerness to share the gospel is rooted in his lack of shame of the gospel because it is only God's power that brings salvation to all. But, can you think of a time where you have felt uncomfortable or really did not want to share the gospel?

The second half of Romans 1 talks about God's wrath for the sin in the world and how we humans have fallen so short of His glory. Sin is a huge portion of our lives.. we can't go on denying the impact of sin and how it changes our hearts and attitudes in the way we do things. But we as His children do not feel God's wrath in our lives. Why? Because Jesus took on ALL of God's wrath on that cross, all the suffering we would have undergone for all the sin that lies in our hearts. How can we not be grateful for His gift of salvation?

PLEASE feel free to comment and add on things that stuck out at you in the passage. :) ....maybe this can be a way we can encourage each other to strive to be deeply rooted in God's word and to draw nearer to Him.

I think it's amazing how Paul states in the beginning that the faith of the Romans is "being reported all over the world" in vs 8. I know we mentioned in an earlier Bible study that we don't really live out our lives proclaiming our faith to the world. I can only imagine what the world would look like if our faith was being reported all throughout the world today. It would be a very different world. I think in order for all of us to have this kind of faith, we really need to have the same kind of attitude as Paul in vs. 16 where he claims boldly that he is not ashamed of the gospel because it is the power of God. This is very challenging to me. I hope one day all of us can truly be unashamed as Christians.

I was really struck by how much Paul loved the church in Rome and how he constantly remembered them in his prayers "at all times" (1:9-10). This makes me think about how often I pray for GCC or for other Christians (which is not very). I think it's easy for me to just concentrate on my own life and issues I'm dealing with, and I think I tend to see church with a self-centered mindset -- "what can church do for me? how does it help my own walk?" On the other hand, Paul is eager to see the Roman church, not so he can feel inspired or whatnot, but so that he can impart on them some spiritual gift to strengthen and encourage them. I think I need to have more of humble mindset and think more about how I can serve, instead of what others can do for me.

I also struggle with being able to proudly proclaim the gospel, and I find it admirable how Paul goes right out and says that he is "not ashamed of the gospel". I want to be able to say that boldly in the presence of both Christians and non-Christians. I think this is something I'll be praying for this week for myself and for everyone in this family group!

I definitely say ditto to Robin's comment about struggling to proudly proclaim the gospel. I always lack the confidence and perhaps clear understanding to share the gospel with those closest to me. I guess what I need to do to improve on this front is to read the Bible more (to develop understanding) and foster a closer relationship with God thru prayer (to gain confidence and comfort when sharing the gospel).

Another part that struck me was "The righteous will live by faith." It reminded me of how little faith I have. I have always struggled with the fact that God is intangible--and every once in a while, I doubt God's existence. I just pray that thru more reading of the Word and prayer, that our faith will grow stronger this year.

I agree with Tiffany on the self centered mindset we might have towards gcc & was surprised at Paul's deep love for these Romans....

I thougth v 29-30 was pretty crazy...even crazier that Christ would die for these people....I would probably not even want to be in the same room as them...(v 30 "hey invent ways of doing evil")..but then I was like..hahah..wait, that's me...
